How To Level Up Music Skills In The Sims 4
5 min read
In the wide world of The Sims 4, there is not much that you can’t do. From becoming a grilled cheese-obsessed Sim to writing books that can bring others back to life, it seems like nothing is impossible. One simpler task that you can accomplish is to learn a musical instrument.
In this guide, we are going to take a look at how to quickly learn to play a musical instrument in The Sims 4. This will also include what you can do with each specific instrument in the game. It’s totally possible to learn every instrument, maxing out your skill for each one.
What Instruments Are In The Sims 4?
There are three instruments in the base game of The Sims 4, which you can find listed below.
If you have the Vampires expansion, you will also gain access to the pipe organ. This is similar to the piano, but it has its own skill meter. As such, being a piano expert will not affect your pipe organ skills.
How To Gain Musical Skills
For every instrument, you can gain the related skill by simply playing it for the first time. For example, the first time you pick up and play the violin, you will acquire the associated skill.
Overall, constant playing will level up a musical skill. There are some situations that can boost your Sim’s learning, which are shown below.
How To Boost Learning |
Description |
---|---|
Inspired Moodlet |
This will boost how quickly a Sim learns to play musical instruments |
Music Lovers Trait |
This is a Sim trait that can be chosen from CAS. By listening to music, you Sim can become Inspired, which will boost learning. |
Creative Trait |
This is a Sim trait that can be chosen from CAS. Random Inspiration can occur, but this trait also focuses on painting. |
Great Acoustics Lot Trait |
This is a lot trait you can choose in Build/Buy Mode. With this, there is a 50% boost to learning a musical instrument. While learning, Sims also become inspired. |
When Can A Sim Acquire A Musical Skill?
Some skills can only be learned once your Sim becomes a teenager. Thankfully, musical skills can be acquired by children, but it takes a little work.
Every musical skill is associated with the Creativity skill, which is exclusive to children. You can level up Creativity by activities such as playing at a dollhouse or with dolls, as well as simply playing an instrument.
When the Creativity skill is fully leveled up (to level ten), your little Sim will be able to level up their musical skills on piano, guitar, or violin.

How To Write Songs
Once you reach level eight on a musical instrument, you will unlock the option to write a song. To do this, all you need to do is select the option from the instrument’s menu.
After naming the song and choosing a genre, it’s time to get started! Overall, this is a very long process, as it takes your Sim a while to write a song. Rather than spending an hour or two writing a song, you will most likely need to put in multiple sessions.
When your song is done, you will be able to play it whenever you want! After reaching level nine in the skill of the instrument, you will be able to license it, which is done from your mailbox. This will provide daily royalties for a week, but you won’t be able to license any new songs during this period.
What is ‘Write Jingle’?
Jingles are short songs that you can unlock fairly early into your instrument-learning journey. These are short songs that you can sell for a varying amount of money.
Overall, think of these like little riffs for a commercial. You won’t earn any royalties, but writing jingles is a great way to make a bit of money while increasing your skill at the same time.
There is a chance that nobody buys the song, and you won’t receive any money.
What Is Busking?
You can only busk for tips with The Sims 4: City Living.
Lastly, let’s go over busking. With guitars and violins, you simply need to put the instrument in your inventory and head to a public space. Pianos, of course, are a bit harder to transport. Thankfully, with the City Living expansion, you will also have access to the DigiRAD Keyboard, which is portable.
With an instrument in your inventory, you can head to busking locations in San Myshuno. Within the main plaza of each district, there will be a blanket set up, where you can busk with an instrument in your inventory. By doing this, your Sim will set out a case that others can put tips into.
